Transgender 101
In 1953, a woman named Christine Jorgenson made history. She was the first publicly known transsexual. As she stepped off of the airplane back into the United States, she faced an onslaught of cameras and press in her face. She had just returned from overseas where her experimental hormone treatments and sugery took place. It was the first step into the view of transgender as it is currently known.
These treatments and surgeries have come a long way since Ms. Jorgenson pioneered them. Most people have preconceptions about what a transsexual goes through. Most people in the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual communities don't even know what transgender is, or what it entails despite being allies. This section seeks to explain the medical side of things. There's a lot to cover, so let's get started.
