Transgender 101
Marriage
Homosexual marriage is a very hot issue in the United States today. Many people in the LGB community want to get married to whom they love. People in the transgendered community may not realize what this means to them as well.
Many transsexuals are married. In some situations it's a heterosexual marriage, and in other rare jurisdictions, it's a legal homosexual marriage. It depends on how the state classifies gender. If amendments pass making homosexual marriage invalid by defining marriage, it may invalidate current marriages that are already considered legal.
The lesbian, gay, and bisexual community really doesn't realize what kind of ally they have with the transgender community. The main reason that laws limiting marriage to a male and female will fail is because transgendered people have already blurred the line between male and female. How do you legally classify a Male-to-Female? Where does a gender queer fit in on that scale? If you define a male or female as a genetic XY or XX, then that eliminates people with genetic disorders from marrying who they wish as well as others. If you define male or female as the ability to procreate, it eliminates people who are infertile or have had surgeries like a hysterectomy. And were do intersexed individuals fall?
These blurred lines will eventually destroy whatever strict marriage laws are made to limit marriage to only between a male and a female. Otherwise, many current legal and happily married couples will have their marriage effectively annulled.
